Students across different countries in Africa gathered at the Conference Centre Hall of the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State for the 2017 West African regional conference of African Students For Liberty (ASFL).
The event, which was tagged at "Creating wealth through free markets" kicked off on Friday 27th October, 2017, and was well attended.
Speaking on "Free Press", renowned journalist and Aljazeera African correspondent; Chika Oduah, said that free press can only be achieved when journalist stopped collecting brown envelopes.
Adding that it is passived to be norm in Nigeria for journalist to collect brown envelope, but it's totally wrong, as this hinders free press.
"We were in Nigeria to gather a story on violence in the Northern part of Nigeria recently and I was offered a brown envelope, which I rejected. The source said to me that it is a normal thing in Africa, that I should just take it, but I declined, then he told me that the local journalists would have jump for it. This is not good " she said.
Other speakers who spoke a the event includes : the Co-founder of BudgIT Oluseun Onigbinde, equal rights activist, Olumide Makanjuola, the African Consultant for International Drug Policy Consortium, Maria Goretti-Ane; a Mandela Washington Fellow and a technology lawyer, Timi Olagunju, and founder of African Christians For Liberty, Chukwemeka Ezeugo, among others.
ASFL is a campus-based organisation, which promotes the ideas of individual liberty and economic freedom. It has membership of over 6,000 young people across Africa and over 200 trained leaders committed to a year-long engagement.
ASFL has its presence in 22 African countries, thus making it the largest libertarian organisation in Africa that identifies, develops and supports the next generation of entrepreneurs and freedom advocates.
Giving the vote of thanks, the ASFL Country Director; Mr. Femi Ogunjobi, thank all delegates who made it to the conference and urged everyone on fighting for liberty.
