BBSI Redefines Philanthropy Among Less Privileged

The Blue Baby Support Initiative (BBSI) has started the redefinition of philantropy in the contemporary world.

The Non Governmental Organization aims to assist children social welfare which includes; healthcare and quality education, amongst others.

Speaking on the birth of the foundation, Mrs Aisha Dania Ogieriakhi (FIIM), the founder of the initiative told journalists that the initiative was officially launched on June 16 2018 in Ibadan to coincide with her 50th birthday.

"The BBSI's idea of charity is one that is symbiotic. To us, donating to charity is a major mood-booster. Even research has identified a link between making a donation to charity and increased activity in the area of the brain that registers pleasure - proving that as the old adage goes, 'it really is far better to give than to receive'", she said.

She further said that the overall inadequate programmes designed to address the numerous health challenges in Nigeria have led to little or no improvement in the health status of its people and there is a huge shortfall in the issues of equity, accessibility, affordability, quality, effectiveness and efficiency in the health sector as against the objectives contained in the revised National Health Policy.

"There is no equitable distribution of human resources between the urban and rural areas. BBSI believes that material, maternal, infant mortality, unnecessary preventable deaths can be reduced to its barest minimum through collaborative efforts between government and the people. The means to improve the lives of others is, to many people, a privilege, and one that comes with its own sense of obligation. Acting on these powerful feelings of responsibility is a great way to reinforce our own personal values and feel like we are living in a way that is true to our own ethical beliefs and helps to spread the idea of generosity. "

The founder said: "BBSI was established to primarily support children with health challenges, young pregnant mothers and ultimately stand in the gap for the disadvantaged in the society."

Mrs. Ogieriakhi said the initiative did not aim to  join the multitude, rather, it was founded with an open heart to make a difference and stand in the gap for those who are in need, help infants, Children and older women, most especially widows.

When asked about the contribution of the innitiative to the society since inception, she said: "the 4-month-old organisation which housed competent and passionate individuals has embarked on several humanitarian interventions within this short period of its existence. Amongst their activities so far isnthe empowerment of several women & youths as a way of assisting and supporting them through their education, trades and entrepreneurship."

"Distribution of cash/food items to 20 widows during the last Ramadan period in Ibadan, settling hospital bills of Mrs Busari of LUTH, the Ugonnas in Ikorodu, Mrs Adeoye also of LUTH and most recently, baby Sikiru Abubakri in UCH, Ibadan who requires a correctional surgery."

"Distribution of relief items worth hundreds of thousands to the IDP's in Makurdi, Benue State. Distributions of food, cash and gift items worth hundreds of thousands of Naira to the residents of Mallam Village, Ebute-Metta to celebrate the Sallah Festival in August 2018 tagged "Sallah with a big Smile", she recounted.

She also promised that the foundation will, by God's grace be celebrating a week-long Christmas event with Children in a hospital at Ejigbo, LUTH, LASUTH and MASSEY Children Hospital where hundreds of thousands of gift items, hospital materials will be distributed".
