Lukmon Fasasi Targeted in Kidnap and Assassination Attempt While in Hiding

Journalist and student activist Lukmon Fasasi, who was released from DSS detention in January 2023, has revealed that he was targeted in an attempted kidnapping and assassination on Wednesday, while in hiding in Delta State.

The incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by the outspoken journalist, who has been a vocal advocate for students' rights and press freedom.

Lukmon was initially detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) in December 2022 upon returning to Nigeria from Cyprus with his pregnant wife, Dasola, and their young son, Khalifa. After weeks of being held, he was released in January 2023. However, fearing for his safety, Lukmon went into hiding in Delta State, where he continued to face threats.

The attempted kidnap and assassination on April 10, 2024, occurred while Lukmon was returning from Asaba to Ellu where he was hiding with his family. According to sources close to the family, the assailants, whose identities remain unknown, targeted him in a brazen attack linked to his work as a journalist and student activist.

Lukmon’s ordeal began with his detention in 2022 and has continued with the recent kidnap and assassination attempt. Despite reporting the April 2024 incident to authorities, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unresolved.

As Lukmon and his family continue to navigate these threats, they are calling for justice and an end to the relentless targeting of those who speak truth to power. “My only crime is my dedication to fighting for a better Nigeria,” Lukmon told Newstalk. “I just want to live in peace and safety, especially for the sake of my children, Khalifa and Khayr".
